Confused? Intimidated?Unable to form your own opinion about anything? Well, lucky for you IncGamers is back with another Games to Watch feature. Find out which games are worth your attention (and hard-earned cash) in February. Sadly, for those of us with modest means, it's looking like another expensive month...
Star Trek Online
Release Date: 2 Feb (US), 5 Feb (EU)
The month begins with the release of the first MMO to take place within Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek universe. With City of Heroes/Champions Online developer Cryptic Studios at the helm, we can expect quality MMO mechanics in Star Trek Online including tactics-heavy ship combat and faster paced action in Away Team missions. We were lucky enough to get some keys for the recent beta test which flew out of the door as soon as we got them, proving there’s huge demand for Cryptic’s MMO. With a whole raft of content confirmed for the 2 February launch and three high-level Borg episodes set to follow post-release, there’ll be plenty for Trekkies to get their teeth into. Check out Bill Vaughan’s hands-on preview and two part beta walkthrough videos here and here.
Dante’s Inferno
Release Date: 5 Feb (EU), 9 Feb (US)
It’s not often we see game adaptations of thirteenth century epic poetry, so for that reason alone EA’s Dante’s Inferno is one to watch. Although developer Visceral Games has taken some artistic license with the storyline - the game’s Dante appears to be a little more action hero than the vulnerable protagonist of the poem - we’re intrigued to see its depiction of the nine circles of Hell, as Dante hot-tails it after Satan himself, who has dragged his beloved Beatrice into the fiery depths. There’s some serious talent involved in the development of the game, with Monster’s Ball scribe Will Rokos penning the story and we can only hope Visceral brings the dark tone and gruesome violence it created in Dead space to Dante’s Inferno. We imagine there’ll also be more of EA’s ‘creative’ marketing to look forward to around the time of release.
BioShock 2
Release Date: 9 Feb
Irrational Studios’ BioShock not only proved to be one of the best shooters of the current generation upon its release in 2007, it also created one of the most memorable game settings of all time in its underwater dystopia, Rapture. Set ten years after the events of the original game, Rapture is a different place in BioShock 2, with a new leader and a new collective philosophy. The player takes on the role of a new protagonist in the sequel, the prototype Big Daddy, who will find himself squaring off against a range of new enemies including the fearsome Big Sister. The sequel will also introduce a multiplayer component to the series, set one year before the original game allowing the player to take part in the civil war which brings about the demise of Rapture. Set to offer an engaging mix of gun and plasmid action, we’re particularly intrigued by the multiplayer aspect of BioShock 2.
