Read about Mythic, Warhammer and watch BlizzCon Interviews...Page 2
21 Oct 2008 at 12:13:15 by Jeff HollisAnd now we bring you the portion of our broadcast in which gaming executives insult each other like teenagers. First up, Jeff Kaplan of Blizzard. Jeff complained that Mythic Entertainment wouldn't let him play in the Warhammer beta. They deliberately blocked him, Jeff said. He also added a few quibbles about WAR copying elements of WoW, and of how he was going to quit playing Warhammer because of server imbalance issues.
Mark Jacobs, CEO of Mythic, responded back with a statement that can be summed up thusly: “QQ more, noob.”
Thankfully, Blizzard wasn't done quite yet. COO Paul Sams, apparently responding to Warhammer's 750,000 sign-ups, cited some rather questionable statistics. He claimed that half the people who'd left WoW to play Warhammer had already returned.
Mark Jacobs, CEO of Mythic, responded with a statement that can be summed up thusly: “Yeah,
whatever.” If you'd enjoy reading some details of this ongoing executive slap-fight (and who doesn't?), you can find them here, here, and here.
Want to see two murlocs ride a bear? Go here. How about two murlocs, riding a bear, while being followed by a third little murloc? Then go here. :)
Thankfully, there was at least one Blizzard executive who wasn't involved in an insult-duel with anyone, and that's good ol' Mike Morhaime. Double-M dished to Wired about the upcoming MMO that Blizzard is working on, and clearly indicated that the game is not WoW 2. Based on this information, and something my fellow staffers at Wandering Goblin personally witnessed, we concluded that the MMO in development is very likely to be Starcraft Online.
While we're on the subject of gaming executive behaving badly, let's consider this week's antics by Curt Schilling. Curt's the CEO of 38 Studios, an MMO company with a game in development. Curt managed to secure a VIP pass at BlizzCon, courtesy of of Blizzard Entertainment.
Curt's response to Blizzard's VIP treatment? He dressed in 38 Studios attire, engaged in a series of attention-getting behaviors, and even began giving interviews on the BlizzCon show floor. During those interviews, he pimped out his still-in-development MMO (a competitor to WoW), promoted his newsletter service (which markets his MMO to other MMO players, specifically those who play WoW), discussed how he's “taking a break” from WoW, and that he is currently playing Warhammer. Yeah, that's pretty darn classy. However, since 38 Studios' PR debacles are rapidly becoming the stuff of legends, this really shouldn't surprise us.
Let's close with some video, shall we?
