Metalocalypse: Dethgame, the spin-off game from Adult Swim's gore-splattered animation about the adventures of an extremely important heavy metal band, will no longer be happening.
The title was reportedly being developed for release on Xbox LIVE Arcade / PlayStation Network, but Adult Swim has confirmed to GamePro that "Cartoon Network Enterprises has indeed ended production on the previously-announced Metalocalypse: The Dethgame."
"The decision was made that the creative direction of the game would not live up to the high standards we had set for the project and we did not want to release a less than outstanding game."
While fans of the Brendon Small-penned series might be disappointed by this, it's quite refreshing for a company to simply kill a spin-off game - rather than try to cash in with an inferior release.
Fredrik Wester, CEO of the Swedish strategy gaming masters Paradox Interactive, has given an interview to GameSetWatch in which he discusses the future of digital distribution.
Wester knows the digital download business, being an original founder of GamersGate. He's still a minority owner of that company, but is now "not operationally involved at all."
"You're going to see a lot of [digital distribution] portals closing in the coming two years," Wester said "Within two years, we'll see who's staying in the business and who's not, and the smaller ones will probably be bought by the bigger ones."
He also offered an interesting view (though one unsupported by any data) on the ability of digital distribution to combat piracy: "Online is quickly gaining ground on the number of [games] sold, and I think a lot of pirates have been converted into paying customers as well by services like Steam."
"It's not very visionary to say that the future is downloadable games - of course it is - but the way it will shape up is basically being decided right now."
APB developer Realtime Worlds has announced Project: MyWorld and launched an accompanying website.
For those familiar with APB, this game is ... nothing like that at all. Project: MyWorld does appear to have some cars in it, but that's as close as it gets. Instead, it seems to be a large-scale building game which will ultimately serve as a giant social networking hub and space for mini-games. At least, that's what I gleaned from the trailer. It is currently confirmed only for the PC, and is due in 2011.
Watch and ponder for yourselves, below.
The gaming press was quick to pick up on a translated Bloomberg Japan article which appeared to suggest that Nintendo would announce the price and release date for the Nintendo 3DS on 29 September.
However, the company has released a statement to VG247 which says "We've not announced anything to Bloomberg or anyone else."
"It's just speculation," the statement continues "It might be a case of Chinese whispers, as we have confirmed to Bloomberg there will be an event on the September 29 in Japan."
Based on the google news archive for this story, it appears to have originated at either Kotaku or gamesindustry.biz (both have time stamps of "11 hours ago," though Kotaku is listed first.) VG247's own piece was altered and re-headlined to include the Nintendo statement.
In the interests of transparency, we also reported the story as confirmed.
Part one of Channel 4's latest trip down educational software lane is now up and available to play, for free.
The game is set in 2027, a sinister authoritarian age in which "second-class citizens are placed under curfew at night" (but wait, that already happens n ... oh, I see.) Players must decide who from "four ordinary people (the immigrant, the dissident, the ex-cop, and the youth)" can be trusted with their inflammatory data disc full of government-exposing details. It presumably contains information about military activities in Afghanistan, because let's face it Britain will still be there in 2027.
A scattering of British actors (Aria Prasad, Amy Noble, Derek Riddell) appear, along with activist Mark Thomas who I hope will be bothering some arms dealers or something.
Be warned though, the loading times are currently a bit absurd - it's perhaps getting a bit hammered at the moment. Parts two to four will be available from next week.
We first heard about Team 17's new 2D version of Worms for the PC back in February, and today we have a whole host of information about the latest addition to the Scorched-Earth-with-added-silliness series.
Worms: Reloaded will be available through Steam on 26 August and represents the first 2D worms game for the PC since 2001's Worms World Party. The press release suggests Reloaded will feature "Over 60 single-player missions (including new Warzone Campaign and Bodycount Mode)" as well as a "fully featured landscape creator" and, of course, over forty five weapons drawn from the entire span of Worms titles. Pre-orders will be possible from 29 July (hey, that's today!) and will net people a 10% discount, one-day early access to the title and some "exclusive items."

Specialist digital download market analysts Forecasting & Analyzing Digital Entertainment (FADE) has revealed Microsoft has earned $46 million USD so far in the first half of 2010.
Overall at the end of June the XBLA market grew 36% compared to the same time last year. FADE reports the turning point was in March when the releases of Toy Soldiers and Perfect Dark occurred both bringing in over $2 million USD.
March saw a 41% year-over-year increase in revenues and the trend continued all the way until June. The “Inventory Blowout” promotion which saw over 20 titles all discounted also helped for larger sale numbers throughout XBLA.
