Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition - 01

Sadly, this is artwork rather than a screenshot. Still a lovely looking game, though.

Square Enix have announced that Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, an updated and retuned version of the game, will be hitting in October.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition is a remastered version of Sleeping Dogs which reworks some of the gameplay and makes everything look a bit prettier, to take advantage of the newest consoles. At least, that’s the plan, although the press release mentions “1080p”. I was running Sleeping Dogs at 1080p awhile ago, guys, and we also had a high-res texture pack on PC. You’ll have to do better than that.

Oh. It turns out they’ve done better than that. “We listened to the fans,” says United Front Games’ senior producer Dan Sochan. “We tuned gameplay, we added to the ambience of Hong Kong, increased audio fidelity and pushed the visuals further than we could on the previous generation of consoles.” No specifics, though.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition will also include 24 pieces of DLC from the original game, including the story-extending Year of the Snake and the horror add-on Nightmare in North Point.

Sleeping Dogs casts you as Wei Shen, an undercover police officer tasked with infiltrating and bringing down the Triads in Hong Kong. In true form, though, it’s not quite as simple as it sounds: going undercover means giving yourself over to that life, and Shen soon finds himself conflicted between loyalty to his job, and loyalty to his new friends. It had good writing, good characters, and a solid mix between close-up brawling and fast-paced driving. It was great.

I’m curious as to exactly how the game will be improved, considering that the updated visuals seem to be a major point of this and the PC version looked stunning anyway, but I’m not complaining too much. Sleeping Dogs was brilliant, and I’m all for getting more people to play it in the hopes that we’ll get a sequel.

Screens below. Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition is due out on 10 October.
