Rise of the Tomb Raider PC release still uncertain (Updated)
Rise of the Tomb Raider has had another little mention at Gamescom’s Xbox conference, but there’s still no mention of a PC version.
In fact, there’s no mention of any other version at all – but there are mentions of “exclusively on Xbox One in winter 2015,” which is a bit worrying.
As far as I can tell, no systems has ever previously been mentioned, and the game itself was announced at a Microsoft press conference. I can’t imagine that Rise of the Tomb Raider will be an exclusive to the Xbox One, but it’s certainly sounding like it’s going to hit that system first. If it does end up on other systems, then it’s presumably going to be in 2016 at the earliest.
I’ve reached out to Square Enix for comment and clarification, but I’m not expecting anything more than “we haven’t announced any other systems”; even so, I’ll let you know if I hear anything. I thoroughly approved of the Tomb Raider reboot and would be rather heartbroken if the sequel doesn’t come to the PC.
UPDATE: Bingo. Square-Enix have responded with: “What we’ve announced today is that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox – we have no further comment to make at this time.”
UPDATE 2: Crystal Dynamics have made a statement on their Tumblr account, of all things, which certainly makes it sound like versions for any systems other than Xbox are currently out of the question. “[…] we’ve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox,” it reads. “This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.”
I’ve got a few thoughts on this, but I’ll probably spin them out in a think-piece article.Related to this story
