Should actually work now. Hurrah.

When it was “released” last week, the Dynasty Warriors 8: XL Japanese Voice DLC pack didn’t actually download properly through Steam. As far as I can tell, that’s because Tecmo Koei hadn’t actually uploaded it yet.

It’s now there and can be downloaded. Here’s how to do so:

  • If you’ve already ‘redeemed’ the free DLC, then bring up the properties menu for Dynasty Warriors 8: XL.
  • Navigate to the DLC tab and find the Japanese Voice DLC. It’ll probably say “uninstalled” next to it.
  • Uncheck the box. Wait for a second or so.
  • Check the box again.
  • Steam should now start downloading the 2.7GB file.

Once that’s done, you should be able to load up Dynasty Warriors 8: XL and find the Japanese Voice option to check in the in-game audio menu. Congratulations, you can now hear actors hamming up Romance of the Three Kingdoms in a whole new language.

If you didn’t previously activate the Japanese Voice DLC, you can find it on this page hidden among lots of very expensive add-ons. It’s free, so just hit the button to get it installed. If something goes a bit awry, then try the method outlined above to prompt it into starting the download.

May the power of Musou be with you always.
