Dark Souls 2 getting a major Calibration 1.08 update on 18 July

Just in time for the DLC.

Oh my god everything is changing and my world is turning upside down, what is even real any more? Sorry, just reflecting on this upcoming Dark Souls 2 patch (updating the PC version to version 1.04 and calibration 1.08) which apparently changes the balancing to some degree on just about every weapon, spell and piece of armour in the game. Or a great many of them, at least.

It’s due on 18 July, a few days before the release of the first bit of Lost Crowns DLC (22 July on PC for that) and will mean the servers are down for a predesignated period of time. Don’t try to play Dark Souls 2 online between 7.00am and 10.00am GMT on 18 July in other words, as the servers will be offline for patching. Edit: It’s out now!

The update is a patch/calibrations combo, which means it fixes stuff like the poison pool sometimes not disappearing when you destroy the windmill in Earthen Peak and also re-balances a whole lot of the items in the game.

Here’s the full list of Dark Souls 2 changes. It’s a biggie.

• Fixed abnormal amounts of damage being caused by certain weapons
• An upper limit has been set to the number of Souls a player can earn when fighting off invading players
• Fixed the phenomenon where the player is not able to talk to Licia of Lindeldt
• Fixed the progression-stopping phenomenon at Heide’s Tower when the host falls off right before the Dragonrider Boss Fight
• Fixed the phenomenon in Majula where the door does not open even after moved by Licia of Lindeldt
• Fixed the progression-stopping phenomenon when the player talks to Laddersmith Gilligan in Earthen Peak
• Fixed the phenomenon when the poison pond does not disappear when the windmill is burned down and immobilized
• Fixed the phenomenon when that the poison pond returns after the windmill is burned down and immobilized, and the player is summoned into another world as a Blue Savior then returned to their own world
• Fixed the loading screen issue when you lose a deathmatch in the Undead Purgatory
• Fixed the issue where saved data cannot be reloaded if the game is shut down right after the player is caught by the Darksucker, in an oil puddle in Black Gulch
• Fixed the phenomenon where items do not disappear from inventory if they are thrown away while they are also being used
• Fixed the ability to use parry while back-stepping
• Fixed the ability to use parry while invincible
• Fixed the phenomenon where the player floats in the air if attacked while hanging onto a rope
• Fixed the phenomenon in Brightstone Cove Tseldora when the Duke’s Dear Freja stops moving after defeating a summoned player in a NG+ playthru
• Fixed the phenomenon where the Tseldora Den Key cannot be acquired after the confrontational event between Mild-mannered Pate and Creighton the Wanderer in Brightstone Cove Tseldora
• Fixed the phenomenon where sound effects volume does not comply with the optional settings during the fight with the Looking Glass Knight
• Fixed the jumping shortcut at the Shrine of Winter
• Fixed the phenomenon where a summoning signature can be written near a bonfire in Belfry Sol Approach
• Fixed the phenomenon where the floor trap in the Iron Keep is displayed differently on host and client worlds during multi-play
• Fixed the phenomenon where the resume point is different from where the game was forced-quit after the player died
• Fixed the issue where the selected message for deletion is not deleted, but a different message is deleted
• Fixed the Halberd weapons sound effects that sometimes do not play when the weapon is swung
• Adjusted the sound made when the Silver Eagle Kite Shield is hit
• Fixed the issue where the player holding thrusting swords in both hands can cause continuous damage until the opponent’s stamina runs out
• Fixed the phenomenon where the player dual-wields whips and only the Right-hand weapon hits the enemy
• Adjustments were made so players can get out of the continuous attacks from Syan’s Halberd
• Adjustments were made so players can get out of the continuous attacks from a player who is dual-wielding with a Straight Sword and with the Red Rust Sword in their left hand
• Defender Greatsword can be enchanted
• Fixed the phenomenon where a heavy attack while holding Pate’s Spear with both hands produces only one hit
• Adjusted the Strong Attack of the Spider’s Silk when Dual-Wielding
• Lucerne Strong Attack will penetrate shields
• Corrected the description of the attack type for the King’s Ultra Greatsword
• Corrected the description of the attack type for Manikin Claws
• Corrected the description of the attack type for Drakekeeper’s Warpick
• Fixed the Symbol Markings of “Galib, God of Disease” and “Caitha, Goddess of Tears” on the Name-Engraved Ring
• Fixed the issue where the Information text sometimes does not display properly
• Correction to the amount of damage inflicted against other players and enemies
• Shortened the amount of time stunned when taking damage from multiple attacks

Adjustments that will be made with Regulation 1.08 (all following changes):
• Health Recovery Items can no longer be used during any PvP
• Increased the matching range for users in online play
• Over-all balance adjustments made to weapons, armors, accessories and spells

    “Health Recovery Items can no longer be used during any PvP” I had to reload the page to make sure i wasn’t just seeing things. i’m glad WoD (whisper of despair) is getting a effect increase as its one of my favorite hexes.

      I’m pretty sure they nerfed the holy water urns too. I was fighting the Gargoyles last night and they seemed to have no effect at all. I’m fairly certain they used to be quite effective before the patch.

    Increased matching range?… That is very terrible idea. People were complaining about this because some really high lvl player can invade lower lvl player (sometimes 200lvl + and -) and they going to extend that?. Sigh.

      I think they mean server based, or that certain level margins were being set up. The reason lvl 200+ and up is messed up is because it’s not level based, it’s soul memory based, and after 1.5 million souls, it doesn’t matter if you have 1.6 or 100 million, you can all be paired together.

    Hmmmm…..the black armour pre order set is missing from all my builds since the patch. I was able to acquire another transgressors shield from the ghost merchant in the castle of course. But he only sells 1 item per playthrough which completely screwed my duel weilding black flame dagger mundane build. 30 hours down the gurgler….

    Just checked the out the giant king farming area and it hasn’t been touched. still get my 447,000+ souls just for the giant king (with my tseldora set and silver serpent +1) and 1,400 for the little guys. Ill assume that if they didnt change the biggest and smallest guys then even the regular giants in that memory havent been changed. No new enemy’s or move sets for any of them and im at bonfire intensity 30. O and the power of my great lightning spear (faith level 77) has been nerfed. Its hard enough landing one in pvp now its taken away uses and messed with the rating.

    So, FROM thought it wise to decrease the overall defense to the heavy armors, but not reduce their weight? What’s the point in that I ask!? For Celestia’s sake the trade off for the higher defense was that the tanks were heavy as hell. But they reduced it? Now it’s like wearing an overweight set of armor with no defense against a toothpick.
    They dropped the ball here. All 30 plus hours of farming TT gone. And for what? An overweight suit of plate-mail with a tradeoff for increased durability? fml. And before you, try hards and GIT GOOD idiots spam my inbox, I can parry consistently, and shield-break with ease. I’ve played the original dark souls. Fought tooth and nail against all sort of BS there, parry spammers, Giant dads, Havel Mothers, and glass cannon mages who can 1-hitko anyone, and I’ve beaten DS2 with every build one can conceive. Reducing the defense of the heavy armor without reducing weight was probably the most asinine move I’ve seen.

    Are you F****** kidding me! This happened YESTERDAY and it just wouldn’t reload, i even brought a new character to undead purgatory and it didn’t work, and I just deleted it hours before this update! I had over 100 hours in that character, had a lot of covenants maxed, AND had a ton of rare sets I farmed. Is there any way to get that game back? He was a dex build too, and I want to check if twinblades don’t have unrealistically short range, when your blade visibly reaches further than the hitbox is ):

      What platform are you playing on. You can back up saves with playstion plus, etc. It will put you write far back, but at least you won’t have to start again.

    My Lightning Spear that had 11 uses now has 3, Emit force had 8 and now has 4 and I haven’t noticed any increase in damage. My only incentive to use anything faith-related anymore is the heals, and they require way too much time to cast or way too many points put into faith and attunement. Miracles have been ruined.

    Absolutely ruined miracles for me when I worked so hard to get my faith up, multiple attument slots, and a nice chime. Total bullshit, glad I just got done beating the game. Won’t be new gaming it anytime soon, thanks.

    The lightning spear reduction is pretty brutal, yes. I can see them partially reversing that at some point in the future.

    So, i can only have 20 lightning spears and they do jack for damage and i have 50 faith… does this mean i can actually do a faith build any more? or is the not stacking aspect because of a bug?

    my faith based fighter is now useless lightning spear doesn’t have enough uses to be worth bothering with, they have nerfed the defender greatsword, I am going to have to quit my new game plus, im not sure I want to relearn the game, all the weapons have changed and I will have to do a totally new build
