Tetris is coming out again as Tetris Ultimate
Ubisoft will be trying to cash in on the 30th anniversary of Tetris with a multi-mode version called Tetris Ultimate. For some reason the PC version is coming a few months after the console ones (autumn, rather than summer.) Well, I say “for some reason,” but this is a Ubisoft release. They like to do that sometimes.
Information about how this version will differ from previous Tetris releases is annoyingly light. The press release just says “Tetris Ultimate allows 1–4 players to face off in six different game modes: Marathon, Endless, Ultra, Sprint, Battle and Power-Up Battle.” Okay, but what are those modes?
Let’s try to guess.
Marathon will be a lengthy game of Tetris, but with an achievable limit on how many lines you need to create to win. Endless will be never-ending Tetris. Ultra will be like Marathon but .. quicker, maybe? Sprint will be a shorter game for those in a rush. Battle will have some kind of method of transferring the lines you clear to the opposing players, perhaps? And Power-Up Battle will be that but with some power-ups of various types.
I have no idea if any of the above is accurate, those are just my predictions.
Tetris Ultimate will be at Ubisoft’s booth at E3, so that’d be one place to get some answers. You may also be able to get an autograph from excellent Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov, because he’ll be hanging out there on 10 June between 2pm and 3pm.
Here are some screenshots, which look quite a lot like Tetris.
