Grid Autosport trailer flaunts hot open wheel action4 Jun 2014
The latest discipline focus video for Grid Autosport takes a look at open wheel racing. That’s the one where it’s a bad idea to run into stuff (or even clip them,) because your wheels are sticking out from the side of your car and you’ll probably just start spinning in a mad circle.
Codemasters’ trailer is accompanied by a fairly in-depth blog post about the techniques necessary for open wheel racing. It uses fancy car racing terms like “slipstream” and “braking points” so that’s enough to convince me the author knows what he’s talking about.
From what I can gather, open wheel racing is all about hitting the racing line on corners and being careful when accelerating out of bends (in case the back end of the car starts wiggling all over the place and causes a spin.) Slipstreaming (driving behind) an opposition car might give you the speed boost needed for overtaking, but it’ll also affect your braking distance at a corner.
Here’s what to expect from open wheel races in Grid Autosport:
- Large grid sizes
- The A.I. opt for clean racing lines
- Cars of similar or pre-defined specification, usually single car class
- Sports-tuned vehicles with lots of grip
- Practice, Qualifying and Race format
- Day time races
And here are the cars you’ll be doing that in:
- Dallara F312
- Lola B05/52
- Dallara IndyCar
- Catherham-Lol SP300R
- Ariel Atom 3.5
- KTM X-Bow R
- Ariel Atom 500 V8
- Caparo T1
Grid Autosport will be released towards the end of this month. You can read the IncGamers preview of the game, here.
