Star Citizen

It’s not great news for Star Citizen fans today as Cloud Imperium has announced that the Arena Commander dogfighting module release has been delayed.

The plans was to release v0.8 at 4PM PST on Thursday (about now) but that time has just passed and after discussions on the status of a release candidate they’e decided to hold off on releasing Arena Commander (Dogfighting Module) until more of the bugs have been squashed.

The plan now is to release daily updates to the community as the team address the critical bugs preventing a release.

It’s shame they didn’t make their own internal deadline for this release but at least we know what’s going on. Now backers will have to sit and wait for these update reports and hope that the issues are resolved quickly.

I know Tim will probably be saying “I told you so”. I think I’ll have to avoid him tomorrow, his gloating will be unbearable.

Chris Roberts posted the following.

The team has been working around the clock for the past two weeks to polish gameplay and eliminate the bugs that would allow us to release Arena Commander V0.8. Today at 4:00 PM PST, I sat down with Star Citizen’s production leads for a ‘go/no-go’ meeting. We went around the virtual table, like a ground control team preparing to launch a rocket, and the decision was that we are not able to release Arena Commander tomorrow as there are too many blocking and critical issues outstanding.

Below you will find a list of the current bugs being tracked by the team. Game developers classify bugs based on their severity: blockers, critical, major, moderate and minor. The most serious of these, blockers, are bugs that completely prevent the game from working and from being in a releasable state. Unfortunately, as of tonight, there are still two blockers and half a dozen critical issues (which we would like to fix before launch.) Our biggest issue today is a newly developed DirectX crash which breaks the single player Vanduul Swarm mode every backer will be given access to.

It would be foolish to release an unstable build, even if pre-alpha for the sake of meeting an internal deadline. This is the power of the crowdfunding that made Star Citizen possible: a publisher would make us ship tomorrow regardless of the current build quality… but as you are all focused on quality rather than a financial return for shareholders we are able to take a few more days to deliver something that is stable.

I know that’s not the news you wanted to hear tonight. No-one would like to see the community get their hands on Arena Commander more than I would.

This is what can happen with an open development process, especially when we are sharing code and content long before one normally would in traditional development. But I don’t think you would want it any other way! The Star Citizen team feeds off of your incredible enthusiasm and your energy for the project… and we want more than anything to see what happens when you get into space.

In order to keep our backers as informed as possible, I’m asking the production team to provide DAILY updates for the community until Arena Commander V0.8 ships. This will be the raw stuff: lists of bugs and other information to tell you the current health of the build. You will see the same information I do, and you will be able to follow as we resolve each “blocker” preventing the build’s release.

I want you to know that we’re very close… just not close enough to launch tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Blockers

  • Vanduul Swarm – Display drivers can crash when Vanduul spawn or blow up
  • Lag in feedback and update of essential game events resulting in increasingly divergent multiplayer sync

Critical

  • Battle Royale (Crash) – While Flying (Shader)
  • Camera – After respawn character is stuck looking up
  • Vanduul Swarm (Crash) – Shortly after missile lock
  • All Maps – Occasionally, when first spawning into the maps lasers and ballistic fire is invisible but can be heard when firing – they eventually appear
  • Crash on exit after returning from DFM match
  • Character is unable to exit DFM Aurora bed if helmet is on
  • Gforce animations are not playing on the pilot in any of the ships
  • Character and parts of cockpit interior vanish while accelerating

I’ve been with the project since its kickstarter and I’ve always been very patient. I know these things aren’t created overnight, and i’m not expecting it to be. However, I really am frustrated with them now. They need to stop giving us these bull**** dates. Only give us a release date when it is concrete, or don’t give us one at all.

When have you ever planned a trip and had it go exactly according to plan?

When have unexpected things popped up that were not anticipated? When have you been perfect?

There needs to be understanding that every release date is assuming nothing critical happens. This was not expected.

SO FCUKING WHAT! working around the clock doesn’t make up for BS and constant BS and more time, and more BS and more unauthentic BS from CR.

Oh thank you for the food and the plaques and the stuff you are sending I am really humbled, $42M in the bank I hope to think you would Fcuking humbled.

Really dudes people have at a minimum coughed up $50 for a ship that looks like a school bus! and to wait for just further BS… a bath towel a Fish tank!!! fuck that I have been alpha and beta testing WT for the last year and we didn’t once get any BS!

So even if they are going to deliver, the integrity needs to be addressed, they need to be up front after all its called crowdsourcing and that means that investors want to see their money actually deliver or no when! Dogfighter#1

        @DogFighter #1

You wouldn’t happen to be the same hatred filled ex backer that posted the same raft of nonsense under the pseudo names of Manzes, MacheteKills, PonyMillar (and quiet a few more) over the past few weeks on various articles about Star Citizen?

You don’t think its obvious that you keep creating throw away accounts to spill bile?

You have been banned multiple times on the Star Citizen forums for the same behavior!

Maybe you’re sore about being banned and having your money refunded as kept creating fights on the forums. How about you put it behind you and invest your energy into something more positive? I’m sure you’ll feel better.

I think the biggest back lash is the lack of integrity, fans have been lead on a glossy expensive series of glitz events that have lead to the delivery of deflated crumpled up fart balloon!

Also the investment of money and time isn’t being repaid in the ships.

For example all of the Next Great Starship guys delivered remarkable quality ships in a very short time, that are both sleek, elegant and very kewl.

How kewl really are the RSI base ships they look like rejects from a Lucas movie which people have paid up to $50 dollars…

so add all this time and a reject ship and your going to get a back lash!

All this investment has been used to pay for the different shows, versus getting the job done, I appreciate they are trying to create a movement and want to publicize the game, however it seems out of integrity with the delivery.

And Chris Roberts Sensor style and his totally unorthentic thanks you for food speak of a man totally in it for the money and not the people or the love.

I will put money on that RSI will float and be gobbled up by EA!

And then we have the bullshit that COD went through.

I think that you will see a major drop off, of investment.

hris Roberts may have just put the first nail in the Crowd funding coffin, which is a great shame!

There is a totally miss balance between investment and return, but wait CR is very grateful! Of course he is grateful, after all he was running out money from wing commander! DOH!

They need to focus on the CORE gameplay I.E. Space combat..not all this other bullshit the fanboy/backers want. I blame them for this.

@Dogfighter#1 & Anon : the problem is, the backlash created by guys like you. If someone could do a project and release a Pre-alpha with a few crippling bugs and NOT get judged solely on how bad those 2 or 3 bugs were. Then they would have released it on schedule, possibly even sooner.

Seeing as they have different studios working on the different aspects of the game, there is no relationship between the DFM having been delayed and the FPS development team. That would be a thrilling conversation wouldn’t it
Person A “Is arena commander ready for launch?”
Person B “Not quite, you know that dev team 3 states over, they’re working on the FPS side and have no impact on anything happening here. It turns out they do have an impact. There be bugs everywhere and it’s all their fault”
Person A “I really hate beetles”

Yes all the ships in TNGS look great, however none of them have been tested properly in engine, let alone in game. Once the ships do get in-engine and are being tested do you really think they’re going to work perfectly and not have any issues at all. Especially when you consider that Jim Boogle was a man, A big big man, with eyes like an eagle and balls like a beagle; Cause Jim boogle was a man, a big big man. That last bit is because I fully expect them two guys to be living under bridges waiting for goats and to have stopped reading after the 1st few lines of this post.

  10. The lacking in communication from devs is been hideous in last 3 days.Ppl been giving false info every day about the release of Arena Commander by Mr.Lesnick/community menager on Twitter???
This getting absurd,Forums culminate and unhappy citizen getting banned for telling their opinion on this issue. This is even worst then delay by itself,Just imagine that you backed someone dream and that one after promises that he break now even talking you right to speak free and express your honest opinion???
