Final Fantasy 3 crystallising on Steam

Final Fantasy 3 - 04

No, I didn’t miss out a 1. 1990’s Japan-only NES RPG is coming to Steam.

Final Fantasy 3 was the first in Square-Enix’s (née Squaresoft’s) hilariously long-running series to reach a million sales, but it didn’t actually hit the west until a Nintendo DS remake in late 2006. As with most of the early Final Fantasy titles, it tracks four heroes as the seek out the Crystals of Light in order to save the world from encroaching darkness – although there was a bit more to it than that. It was also the first in the series to use the Job system, letting you change the class of each character on the fly and offering a staggering number of possible party combinations.

The PC version of Final Fantasy 3 will offer improved Steam achievements, updated visuals, trading cards, and a bunch of UI tweaks, like “quicker browser through the monster bestiary.” A glance at the screenshots below makes it look like they took either the DS or phone versions as a base, then upped the resolution and fiddled with the UI. If you’re expecting some sort of native 1920×1080 monster version you’ll probably be disappointed, but I suspect it’ll look quite nice when run in a window.

No word yet on when Final Fantasy 3 will be released or how much it’ll cost, but I’m bouncing up and down on my chair in anticipation anyway. Can we have an updated version of Final Fantasy 6 next, please?
