EA server shutdowns condemn Battlefield 1942 to multiplayer history

battlefield 1942

This man is quite rightly upset about it all.

Another round of PC servers is on EA’s chopping block, including Battlefield 1942 and Command & Conquer: Generals. 30 June will be the last day you can play any of these EA titles online without finding elaborate work-around solutions.

EA’s stance on these server closures is always “as games get replaced with newer titles, the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles to a level – typically fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles,” and therefore any behind-the-scenes maintenance is no longer worth it. Looking through the cold eyes of business that’s probably accurate, but from an archival perspective that sees individual games as part of the history of the medium, it’s disastrous.

There has to be a better way of dealing with the dwindling server populations on a classic game like Battlefield 1942 that can satisfy both the publisher and the remaining player-base (or just fond gaming historians) than just closing everything down. I’m not sure what that solution might be, but the current method is pretty troubling. It turns games into disposable ephemera that somehow lose all meaning after their “peak” years are over. This doesn’t seem to be an ideal state of affairs.

Unfortunately, unless some kind of third-party group interested in preserving gaming’s history pops up with substantial funding, this is probably going to just keep on happening.

Here are the PC games about to lose their online capabilities:

  • Battlefield 1942 for PC and Mac (including The Road to Rome and Secret Weapons of WW2 expansions)
  • Battlefield 2 for PC (including Special Forces expansion)
  • Battlefield 2142 for PC and Mac (including Northern Strike expansion)
  • Battlefield Vietnam for PC
  • Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars for PC and Mac (including Kane’s Wrath expansion)
  • Command & Conquer: Generals for PC and Mac (including Zero Hour expansion)
  • Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 for PC and Mac
  • Crysis 2 for PC
  • Crysis for PC
  • Crysis Wars for PC
  • EA Sports 06 for PC
  • F1 2002 for PC
  • Global Operations for PC
  • James Bond: Nightfire for PC
  • Master of Orion III for PC
  • Medal of Honor: Allied Assault for PC and Mac (including Breakthrough and Spearhead expansions)
  • NASCAR Sim Racing for PC
  • NASCAR Thunder 2003 for PC
  • NASCAR Thunder 2004 for PC
  • Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 for PC
  • Neverwinter Nights 2 for PC and Mac
  • Neverwinter Nights for PC, Mac and Linux (including Hordes of the Underdark and Shadows of Undrentide expansions)
  • Star Wars: Battlefront for PC and PlayStation 2
  • Star Wars: Battlefront II for PC and PlayStation 2

One of the better articles on the matter. There HAS to be a better way yes. And folks should KNOW.. a few people playing these classic games…. hahaha.. NO, at least not in the case of Battlefield 1942. This shutdown could in effect cripple the largest FPS communities in existence in North America and Europe. The top servers for 1942 stay populated 24 / 7 at full capacity. Yes, the community is working on fixes.. however the days of being able to join a ‘pure’ FPS.. probably over soon. 1942 takes 40 + players on any given map for them to play correctly.

I take issue with EA stating that they we’re working with community leaders. This has not happened in years as far as I know. Within the 1942 community who have they spoke to? Which representative of which community?
When the community leaders went to EA with concerns over punkbuster not being offered as a possibility for their ‘free’ download and listing directly which communities they represented.. They didn’t even offer so much as a response. Not even a ‘no’. Just dead silence. Now how much do you think those community leaders helped prop up that billion dollar franchise. Most successful FPS shooter of all time. Maybe just enough that you could spare a reply?

We are lead to believe that the player base wants to spend $200 per game for games with embedded forms of currency with a 1yr play time, a 7 day guarantee and Modern Combat. While no new WW2 have been released… and the remake that was promised for 42 was pulled for PC only. The players who fueled EA/FPS 42 franchise.. have essentially been told to go to hell… again.

EA = Rent a $60.00 game. I will never purchase an EA game after Battlefield 4 disaster.

  4. i played UT2004 recent;y just for a laugh, and was shocked to find a load of people still playing

and dont understand why theres no new world i or II games

I dont think I going to fork out any more cash for fps games since it just seems a big con to me now, constant upgrades to new versions that are not much better or fun to play, each time at huge cost IMHO

Played Medal of Honour: Allied Assault for years. That and D2 dominated my spare time in my teens. CoD 2 is the only FPS that has ever came close in terms of an FPS experience. Might have to have one last hurrah before the service shuts down!
