Walk like an Egyptian, as the ancient prophet Bangleus once said.

Remember a few weeks back when an enhanced re-release of Age of Mythology was teased by a fluffy hand-puppet (I called it a sheep at the time, but I think it was actually an alpaca – apologies to all alpaca lovers out there)? You can now consider it confirmed beyond doubt, as the official Age of Empires site has put up a page for Age of Mythology: Extended Edition.

That very same page lists a May 2014 release date and states that this re-released version of the game will come with “Steam Workshop, improved rendering engine, Twitch TV integration, enhanced observer mode, native support for Win 7/8 and HD monitors,” and, of course, “more.”

Age of Mythology: Extended Edition will come bundled with the Titans expansion from the original game and will be available to pre-purchase some time in early April. So, pretty soon then.

The game takes the Age of Empires structure and applies it to ancient mythology. Egyptians will do battle with Greeks, and Atlanteans will duel with Norse. Scores of great monsters and creatures of legend collected together in one place.

Here are some minimum spec requirements, followed by some images from the game:

OS: Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8.1
Direct X 10+ Capable GPU
Direct X Compatible Sound Card
Hard Drive: 3 GB RAM
GPU at least (Integrated HD 3000, X1950, 8600GT)

€28 for an 11-year-old with some bloom effects?

No thanks. Age of Empires 2 HD had a dreadful launch. This game probably will as well.

Certainly possible, though I think it’s a different studio handling this – Hidden Path did AoE2HD, while SkyBox is doing this. I have no idea if that’s a good sign or not, but I do like the addition of full mod support and the updated graphics certainly look playable.

You’re right that it’s pricey, though, and considering AoE2HD’s launch it’s definitely worth waiting for opinions. I can’t say I’d pay £18 for Age of Mythology these days, though, even if the launch is perfect.
