In a shock subversion of Valve Time, Free to Play – Valve’s documentary about three professional gamers as they prepare for and compete in The International, the million dollarĀ Dota 2 tournament – is now out.

I say “shock subversion” for two reasons. Firstly, it was actually due out today, so that’s new. Secondly, I wasn’t expecting it to be released quite this early today; Valve being Valve, I figured it’d be closer to midnight in the UK, or at least 6pm. But no! It’s out now.

I’m not going to waffle on any further because I intend to watch it later on tonight and then write something up about it, but if you fancy giving it a look, click on over to the film’s Steam page. And yes: as the name implies, Free to Play is free-to-play. If you fancy chipping in then you can also buy the Competitor’s Pack for a tenner, which offers some Dota 2 sets as well as a HUD, a courier, and some wards, with part of the proceeds going towards the three gamers focused on in the film itself.
