podcast 154

Welcome one and all to another IncGamers Podcast, in which the team discuss Square Enix’s incredible inability to provide a Thief Steam key for review purposes. It probably has nothing to do with the quality of the game, which is so high that Rhianna Pratchett has openly distanced herself from it.

Another person wanting to put some distance between himself and a project is Dean “Rocket” Hall, who has said he’ll be leaving DayZ sometime towards the end of 2014. What does this mean for the game? We can’t predict the future so we don’t know, but we’ll discuss the situation anyway.

Elsewhere, Daylight plans to integrate Twitch chat commands into the game, Star Citizen shoots for some procedurally generated planets and we talk about Hello Kitty Online for some reason. Double Fine fans have plans for Bad Golf: Community Edition and the Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls beta ends rather suddenly.

This week, the podcast team has played Strider, more Banished and a bit of the Early Access version of Dead State.

Download, stream, view and all those other interactive adjectives apply to the podcast, below. The podcast archives are now restored, so you can find previous episodes right there. iTunes has a few as well.

  1. Banished definitely has a few AI bugs. However, I’ve found that the game is much easier to keep track of and significantly more pleasant to play at 2x speed. I’m 10 hours into my latest town with about 200 population, and I’ve never once gone above 2x. It gives you time to observe what’s really going on, and not rely on numbers so much.

Also, a game that involves finding notes in your starfighter cockpit sounds strangely appealing. Maybe not about awkward teenage girls, but like…imagine a full Millennium Falcon simulator. Through the Oculus Rift, even. There’s a lot you could do with that sort of setting which isn’t just flying around shooting things.

    1. After some more testing last night I am 90% positive Banished cheats to keep population low. It’s really below the belt and super frustrating.

I put this on the Banished guide but I’ll add it here too.

I had to stop playing Banished last night. I think I’m done.

I’ve built two reasonable towns with production at around 25% above consumption to allow for growth. Enough firewood etc. Then inexplicably all the food is suddenly consumed, and/or all the firewood disappears and the population quickly begin to die of starvation. So quickly the messages quickly scroll by on the alert tab. As well as by starvation kids will be just dying, no reason given just “X the child has died”. Within 10 mins a population of 110 is all dead.

I’m not a newcomer to this genre and I get that banished has more focus on watching the spreadsheet than other builders. But it’s as if to add difficulty and challenge these invisible ‘disasters’ are thrown at you with no way to stem the destruction. I didn’t expect Banished to fall into the same trap some other builders have.

Once everyone is dead that’s it. Game over man, game over. You can’t wait for nomads to kickstart your ready-made town.

Disappointed and annoyed as I Really (yes really with a big R) wanted to enjoy Banished for many months.
