Valve VR holodeck

Wait … that’s not Gabe.

The full presentation of Valve’s VR prototype (which Steamdb thinks could going by the name ‘Vortex‘) will take place later today at Steam Dev Days, but Tripwire’s David Hensley has already had a go with it and has tweeted a series of extremely positive impressions.

He states that the VR demo felt like “being in a lucid dream state” and compares it to Star Trek’s holodeck.

In addition, he says it will be “hard to go back” to his Oculus dev kit after having this experience.

Pressed by someone to explain why it’s so great, he cites higher resolution, lower latency and accurate head tracking.

If all of that is accurate, Valve’s VR project could be something rather special. There should be more impressions emerging from the Steam Dev Days event over the next 24 hours, so we’ll be keeping an eye out for them.

Update: Further positive developer impressions were released, but it turns out that Valve’s prototype will remain just that. The company has no current plans to release VR hardware, and instead is collaborating with Oculus Rift.
