Final Fantasy XIV patch 2.1 trailed, detailed, dated
Final Fantasy 14 AL1 - 06

‘s major forthcoming patch 2.1 – entitled “A Realm Awoken” – has been detailed, dated, and given a shiny trailer. Although at 10 minutes, I’m not sure “trailer” really does it justice.

A Realm Awoken adds a frankly terrifying amount of stuff to Final Fantasy XIV. There’s the Crystal Tower, a new dungeon that sees up to 24 players battling through both the titular tower (thought to be a legend, up until the Calamity struck) and the Labyrinth of the Ancients, the maze that leads to its entrance. There’s the Wolves Den PvP arena. There’s player housing, in terms of creating a base of operations for your free company – buy a plot of land, and then customise your base with fixtures, decorations, and furnishings.

That’s the big stuff. That’s not even close to everything.

There’s Thornmarch, which revolves around the Moogles trying to resurrect Good King Moggle Mog XII. There are daily beast tribe quests. There are treasure hunts for up to four players. There’s a quest to unlock an aesthetician, who’ll let you change your appearance. There’s Hildibrand and the mysteries she’s unravelling. There’s Pharos Sirius, a lighthouse inhabited by the siren of Umbra. There are Hard versions of Haukke Manor and Copperbell Mines. There are Extreme versions of the Garuda, Titan, and Ifrit primal battles. There’s a Duty Roulette letting you enter dungeons, trials, and guildhests at random, offering bonus rewards and four categories – each of which can be attempted once a day. There’s a hard mode battle against Ultima Weapon. And, naturally, there are main scenario quests, once more dealing with the beast tribes, the Garleans, and the Ascians.

That’s quite a lot of stuff.

This mega-patch will be released for free on 17 December, and you can check out a video overview (that description works better than “trailer”, doesn’t it?) below. I’ve been meaning to get back to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn for quite some time; this might be a prime opportunity for me to do so.
