Star Citizen reaches $32 [Update $33] million – Backers go funding crazy

Star Citizen (19)

I didn’t think I would be writing another Star Citizen update for at least 48 hours but how wrong I was.

This evening funding reached $32 million, that’s another million in probably just slightly over 24 hours. Players will now have access to the Aegis Surveyor :

The Surveyor, from noted military contractor Aegis, is an industrial-quality salvage ship. Equipped with a reinforced cargo bay, a long-range jump drive and launch pods for unmanned drones, the Surveyor is an ideal ship for taking advantage of deep space wrecks. Tractor beams, floodlights, scanner options and docking ports round out the tool chest on this capable, utilitarian spacecraft.

Then it reached $33 million because people can’t help giving Chris Roberts money. What did that achieve? The following ship:

The Anvil Carrack has been the vanguard of every UEE exploration effort in recent years. Featuring reinforced fuel tanks for long-duration flight, a highly advanced jump drive array and a dedicated computer core room that allows it to put the maximum processing power into jump charting operations. Originally a military exclusive, the Carrack is now available for civilian use as a pathfinder spacecraft. Features on-board accommodations to allow for truly self-sufficient flight, including crew medical and repair facilities, and a mapping-oriented sensor suite capable of always charting a route home!

Next up is the smuggling ship at $34 million, the MISC Hull C (Discreet)

Scaling from small “box trucks” to massive supertankers, the MISC range of cargo hulls (A-D) are the standard goods transporter in human space. Extremely configurable, MISC Hulls can be adapted for most any type of transport job: from standard bulk shipping on the patrolled spacelanes to armored cargo hauling on the frontier. While these pre-configured hulls are primarily used for legitimate purposes, the MISC Hull Cs have recently become the favorite for criminals who modify the ship with advanced sensor shadow technology, quick-decompress holds and a variety of hidden compartments without modifying the ship’s body so it will appear to onlookers as standard everyday transports.

As a backer of the game myself I’m super pleased the game funding is going ballistic, it means more content for players. I am however starting to slightly question the sanity of the fanbase, pushing in these extra millions for more ships?

I know I would have loved to see more being pumped into the single player Squadron 42 pool of funds during this process, and although each million raised isn’t solely going into creating a ship, it’s odd how this is now what’s encouraging backers to part with more cash so quickly.

With so many features already having been added during the earlier funding goals, and Chris Roberts stating that there’s no “feature creep”, there can’t be too much left they can promise for more funds. Coincidently this was discussed in today’s podcast recording that will be live later today.

If the funding keeps going at this date I’m sure Cloud Imperium will be building a real ship.

Seriously? The funding spike was solely due to the November 26 cutoff for ships with Lifetime Insurance. Funding will slow significantly, now. I would be surprised if they hit their next goal within a week.

The funding unlocking ships isn’t ALL the extra finances pays for. He’s just releasing that now as a compensation. The extra 2 million will no doubt go to more awesome things, and if Chris wants to buy a keg of craft brew for the break room I hope he does.
