John Carmack resigns from Id Software, continues role at Oculus
It’s the end of an era at id Software, as the studio announces John Carmack’s resignation. Carmack was the final founding member of the development studio behind titles like Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein 3D, and will now continue his role as Chief Technical Officer over at Oculus Rift.
He took the Oculus job back in August 2013 and, at the time, it was announced that Carmack would be able to perform both duties. Today, he wrote on twitter that he “wanted to remain a technical adviser for Id, but it just didn’t work out,” adding “the divided focus was challenging.”
Id’s current studio director Tom Willits paid tribute to Carmack and said “John’s work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects.”
Since June 2009, Id Software has been owned by ZeniMax (also the parent company of publisher Bethesda.) Find out how Tim’s getting on with the Oculus Rift in the first part of his VR diaries, here.
