Double Fine reacquires Stacking and Costume Quest rights
Double Fine and Nordic Games have announced that the former has reacquired the publishing and distribution rights to both Costume Quest and Stacking, and that the pair have partnered up for retail releases of both games – and Psychonauts – in 2014.
Nordic Games acquired the distribution rights to both Costume Quest and Stacking earlier this year, after THQ went bankrupt. However, according to Double Fine president and CEO/bearded man Tim Schafer, getting these rights back from Nordic Games was no easy task. “I am pleased that we have regained full control over Costume Quest and Stacking, following a daring and top-secret midnight raid on the Nordic Games headquarters in Vienna.”
This is disputed by Nordic Games’ owner and CEO Lars Wingefors, though. “We can’t wait to partner with Double Fine for this upcoming retail launch of three of its most excellent games. However, I feel compelled to point out that we were happy to transfer distribution rights for Costume Quest and Stacking back to Double Fine in an entirely non-secretive and heist-free manner.” But then he would say that, wouldn’t he?
Whether or not heists were involved, consumers in North America and Europe will be seeing Windows and Mac versions of Costume Quest, Stacking, and Psychonauts on store shelves during the first half of 2014. It’s not clear whether or not they’ll be separately released or if they’ll be in one big compilation box, but either way, I guess this is another version of Psychonauts I’m going to wind up buying.
On that note, buy Psychonauts. It’s great.
