New Deus Ex game being developed for PC2 Oct 2013
A blog post by David Anfossi, the new head of Eidos Montreal, notes that “we are already into production of the starting point for Deus Ex: Universe with a new game for PC and next-generation consoles.” Whatever this new game will be, the people working on it are mostly comprised of the Human Revolution team, so that bodes well.
Deus Ex: Universe, revealed in the same blog post, is “an ongoing, expanding, and connected game world built across a generation of core games,” which actually worries me a considerable amount. The team want to “deliver a deep conspiracy that will span several connected Deus Ex games, creating a more immersive and richer experience than ever before,” which is all well and good… except that it will apparently also span “tablets, smartphones, books, graphic novels, etc.”
If done right, fair enough; if done wrong, we’re going to wind up with something that’s hugely bloated, massively confusing, and will require you to get involved in every piece of lore to actually understand what’s going on. A massive game-spanning mystery complete with books and ARGs and comic books did not do Assassin’s Creed any favours and mostly made me feel like I would never follow all the details, so there was no point in even trying. Probably not what they were aiming for.
Finally: the above piece of concept art is from the next-gen Deus Ex game, showing “trans-humanism segregation” in a ghetto city built to separate the classes. This will, it seems, be a fairly major theme in the upcoming title.
