Henkel to return to Kickstarter with Deathfire: Ruins of Nethermore

Hello, I am most assuredly an Elf.

Guido Henkel, the game designer probably best known for the Realms of Arkania trilogy (but also for contributions to Planescape: Torment and Fallout 2,) will return to Kickstarter with Deathfire: Ruins of Nethermore on 6 November. Henkel’s previous attempt to get an RPG off the ground on Kickstarter, Thorvalla, did not meet its funding targets.

Deathfire is a little different from that project, however. It’s set to be a first-person, party based RPG with turn-based combat. Rather like the older games Legend of Grimrock was paying homage too. A prototype of Deathfire is said to have been in development for the past eight months or so. As a result, the Kickstarter page should be able to share a reasonable amount of detail about the game when it appears next month.

Ahead of that, here are some numbers: Deathfire will have six races, eight classes and more than 34 unique character traits. There’ll be indoor and outdoor environments (so you won’t just be delving through dungeons all day long,) an “adaptive” storyline with multiple twists and several political factions for the purposes of INTRIGUE.

Anybody who backs the game on the first day of its Kickstarter launch will receive an exclusive in-game item of some sort (available then, and only then.) In addition, if 1,500 backers are secured within the first 48 hours, the plan is to create a special cover, exclusive to Kickstarter editions of the title.

Oh, and it’s called Deathfire because a pesky Necromancer has discovered a spell of the same name which can burn people’s souls and force them to return to do the caster’s bidding. Helpful, but probably a bit on the unethical side.
