outlast

We don’t have a review of Red Barrels Games’ spooky new survival-horror game, Outlast, just yet… but we do have a video of Tim shitting himself while playing through the first ten minutes of the game.

Outlast casts you as an investigative journalist who wanders into a decrepit asylum in search of a scoop. In the middle of the night. Alone. With nothing but a notepad and a camcorder. Predictably, things go horribly, horribly wrong. Outlast doesn’t give you any means of defending yourself except for running and hiding from the insane aggressors chasing you, and that ratchets up the tension considerably.

This video contains horror themes, gore, and strong language – the latter mostly from Tim.

UPDATE: A second video, following on directly from the first, is now available. Spooky!

UPDATE AGAIN: And a third. Weep.

In the first video when the lights went out at 5:50 and you said “Oh FFS!”…that would be exactly what I’d say just before hitting ‘quit’.

At 10:03 I jumped a frigging mile and made herbie, my cat, shoot up from his sleep on my desk. I loved how you clearly lost control of the mouse too. Cracked me up.

I wish the 2nd video had been longer as you stopped it at a really good bit when you were hiding. Did he come back and did you get away?

Once you realize how the mechanics work (which for me was right after the “turn the generator on” section, there’s hardly any scare left. After that I was running a lot and tricking the poor monsters. Fun game, but too scripted and way too linear.
