What’s this all aboot? Oh wait, these guys are from the US.

I’m British, so as far as I’m concerned a ‘puck’ is something from Midsummer Night’s Dream and nothing whatsoever to do with organised sporting events. But if I’m to succeed at all in Franchise Hockey Manager 2014, that’s a prejudice I need to overcome.

Join me, for 40 minutes (yes, 40 minutes) of grueling statistical action and hand-drawn hockey faces as I attempt to lead a lower league team of English chancers to glorious victory on the ice. There will be rosters. There will be baffling drop-down menus. And there will be no-holds barred ice hockey (text) action.

I think I was starting to understand the tactics a little, from a football perspective. Like, forechecking is high pressing. I think.

I am baffled by the constant rotation of active players, though.

I think you may have inadvertently picked one of the best teams. The text of the Season Preview was hilarious:

“The scoring race will likely see Whitley’s Adam Reynolds challenged by Daniel Good of Whitley and Whitley’s Callum Watson.

The top defenceman in the league is generally considered to be Whitley Warriors blueliner Rob Leask, with Whitley’s Nathan Ryder and Ross Hanlon of Whitley also in the running.

Finally, among goaltenders, Whitley’s Richard Lawson stands out as the league’s best, while Whitley Warriors netminder Joseph Harley and Blair Daly of Solway can also steal games for their teams.”
