Wolfenstein: The New Order

You won’t be seeing these chaps until 2014.

Bethesda’s Pete Hines has been saying words in the direction of Polygon, and many of those words have to do with a delay to Wolfenstein: The New Order. Rather than appearing at the very end of 2013, the game will now be released at some point in 2014. The added difficulties of having to develop for both current-generation and upcoming consoles at once (as well as PC, of course) is cited as one of the factors.

But by the sounds of things, the title just needs a little more time and Bethesda is giving developers MachineGames exactly that. “It’s trying to be a shooter that also has driving elements, story elements, narrative, stealth sections — each one of those has to be excellent,” Hines says.

Wolfenstein: The New Order borrows the plot from Philip K Dick’s The Man in the High Castle (and numerous other sci-fi outings) in imagining a world where the Nazis were triumphant in World War II. It is, of course, the latest in a long line of “reimagined” versions of the original Wolfenstein 3D, a game often credited as the progenitor of the first-person shooter genre.
