Ashes Cricket 2013

Alas! 505 Games and Trickstar’s official Ashes Cricket 2013, originally due out to coincide with the first Ashes series of 2013 (now) has been delayed until the return series in November.

By way of explanation, 505 Games’ vice president of global brand & marketing Tim Woodley said: “We all had high hopes of bringing out a stellar cricket game during the first leg of this unprecedented Ashes year. But the fact of the matter is, we took a long hard look at the game as it stands and decided it simply wasn’t good enough in its current state. It was simply not worthy of the Ashes name.”

Woodley puts it down to “unforeseen issues” that developer Trickstar have had to deal with, meaning that the game hasn’t had enough polishing and fine-tuning. I’m somewhat glad, to be honest. I’ve seen enough games released that desperately needed polishing and fine-tuning.

This is the second delay the game has suffered. Let’s hope it doesn’t suffer any more.

American friends: cricket is a game sort of like baseball in that it involves a man throwing a ball and another man hitting the ball, but the bowler (our version of a pitcher) is trying to hit wooden stumps (wickets) placed behind the batsman. It only has two bases, and matches regularly span multiple days. Really.

Handy for them that there actually IS a second Ashes series this year, I guess. We’d probably have seen a rushed game otherwise.

Yeah, this smacks a bit of “we have an opportunity to delay it while still technically being able to release in a timely fashion, should we do it.” Not necessarily a bad thing if the end product’s worthwhile, though.
