The War Z has had its fair share of controversies since it launched, too many to list here. Today Hammerpoint Interactive revealed that the game is now being renamed to Infestation: Survivor Stories.

This is just the latest bizarre move by the developers but it appears their hand was forced due to trademark issues which does not surprise us in the slightest. The statement reads:

Effective today, The War Z has changed its name to Infestation: Survivor Stories. This change has come about primarily as a result of some confusion and trademark issues with a similarly titled property. While we were reluctant to rename the game so long after launch, especially with nearly 1 million registered players, it was ultimately decided to be in the best interest of our existing community as well as future players in order to eliminate confusion. Please rest assured that this will in NO WAY affect you as players. The only difference you will see is the change in logo and website. There will be no interruption of service or change in content.

Dean Hall who is working on DayZ will be please though, The War Z name and all the bad press surrounding The War Z depressed the hell out of him back in December.

As there is no change to War Z as far as the game is concerned,  our advice is just don’t bother.

I imagine it’s no coincidence that “World War Z” opens tomorrow.

TRANSLATION: “We saw absolutely no downside to renaming the game so long after launch. With 1 million registered players we’ve probably milked the World War Z/Day Z name similarities as best we can, and since word has spread that The War Z is awful, we thought changing the name might create some extra confusion and get us a few more purchases.”
