Heavy Gear Assault

Bot Productions, who are working on Heavy Gear Assault which is currently crowd funding on Kickstarter,  has revealed what they call their “Free to Choose” options.

More and more free to play titles are appearing on the market with different business models, so to make sure backers understand their business model for their Heavy Gear Assualt,  Bot Productions posted a lengthy explanation on the different tier costs and what players will receive in each tier.

The game is spilt into three models, opt-out, premium and free to play. The opt-out model offers game content for a single purchase of $35.00-$60.00, the Premium membership costs $4.99 per month and comes with the mission editor and what they say is “total flexibility”. The final option is the free to play which allows you to purchase items on an individual basis.

Bot Productions are putting a “Threat-Value System” in to Heavy Gear Assault which will match gamers on skill levels and their equipment. This should mean that pay to win is eliminated in competitive matches.

Free to play business models can be confusing and there’s often an emphasis on pay to win. Some companies such as Grinding Gear Games with their ARPG Path of Exile have been leading the way in moving from pay to win by offering only cosmetic item purchases. This idea is great as it places more emphasis on the game’s quality an reassures players they are on a level playing field.

Bot Productions sound like they are working on this Threat-Value System to eliminate any pay to win advantage which can only be good for the game, especially if they want to push it as an eSport should it be funded.

You can read the latest update on all of the above on the Kickstarter page.
