As if having to try to pronounce John Riccitiello’s name last week wasn’t challenging enough, this week the podcast team has to deal with resigning Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada. Apologies in advance for the horrible mangling of that chap’s name (listening back, it seems like I called him Waba instead of Wada … oh dear.)

We look at Square’s recent track record with Western-released games and wonder if slow sales of titles like Hitman: Absolution, Sleeping Dogs and Tomb Raider are really providing the whole story for Wada’s departure.

Elsewhere, Steam bundles up all of its paid alpha titles into a big old blanket named ‘Early Access.’ Is this all just a response to The War Z, or an attempt to further legitimise the idea of the paid alpha? We look at the ups and downs of giving players early access in this fashion.

Plus, there’s PAX East news aplenty with word of a new XCOM … thing, and Blizzard’s super exciting announcement of a free online card game. Yay!

This week, Tim’s been playing Resident Evil 6, I’ve been polishing off Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 and Paul’s been obsessing over his chopper in Thunder Wolves.

    When I was in school in the late 90s (in the US), Magic: The Gathering was hugely popular and not just among nerds like me. There’s something particularly charming about a collectible card game, though the business model of constantly forcing you to buy new sets of cards eventually turned me off.

    So I was reasonably excited about Hearthstone, even though I don’t care about the Warcraft universe at all and think Chris Metzen ruins every story he touches. And I remain tentatively interested, despite the videos suggesting gameplay and deck building mechanics that are perhaps too simplistic to be really engaging.

    It mostly depends on how evil they’re planning to be with the F2P business model. If it’s possible to collect all the good cards through non-boring gameplay, then I’m all for it. It’s not particularly innovative or ambitious, but it has the potential to be lots of fun.

    Yeah, Paul’s just ashamed of being a nerd. The big weirdo.

    Pokemon cards and Magic cards were both fairly popular with almost everyone when I was in school (albeit at different times) and I’ve still got a soft spot for that sort of thing now. I don’t really have the time or money to put towards CCGs now, but this perhaps explains why I quite like things like Duels of the Planeswalkers (which cuts out the need for much time or money!) and I still get the chance to play tabletop board games every so often.

    I can’t say I’m likely to indulge in Hearthstone and I wish the announcement was something a bit more innovative, but I don’t really begrudge Blizzard for trying this – they already had a degree of success with a physical WoW CCG, after all, and even if Hearthstone turns out to be fairly derivative I expect it’ll be polished and enjoyable. Those are the two things Blizzard pretty much always manage, after all.
