 Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

The pre-teased announcement from Activision-Blizzard at this year’s PAX has manifested as Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. It’s an online, digital collectible card game thingie, which is of course free-to-play and microtransaction-tastic.

You’ll select one of nine Warcraft (REGISTERED TRADEMARK) heroes and do battle against a worthy foe with your customisable card deck, full of spells, creatures and weapons. The game is being developed by a small team within Blizzard who claim to “looooooove” collectible card games. And who can question that devotion when it’s spelled with seven o’s?

New cards will be earnable in-game, or can be (here it comes!) purchased at an in-game store. The game’s site has a beta sign-up button, but this only appears to be an option for those in North America at present. According to the FAQ, “We hope to launch a beta test in other game regions after the initial beta-test launch in North America.”

I’m sure Blizzard could have announced something I had less interest in than this… but nothing leaps to mind.

I was a huge player of M:TG back in the days of 4th Edition, and I’ve always kinda wanted a really good online CCG that doesn’t require constant investment of cash (ie, not Magic Online).

Unfortunately, this looks like it will probably be too simple to be really appealing. Also, describing your dev team as “hardcore ninjas” and constant repetition of “epic”…is just cringeworthy.

Odd. It takes Blizzard the same amount of employees to create a card game as it took an indie group of Kiwi developers to create Path of the Exile.

Game itself looks polished, missed opportunity to include SC and Diablo franchise like “Barcraft” did. Like the spell effects, very flashy, and it will run on mobile devices. Not bad to goof-off on with your tablet while laying in bed. Looks too traditional though, nothing really deviates it from the already popular MTG other than Warcraft stuff. Would of preferred it to be hero based and other cards are supporting, just like Barcraft did, but with more depth.

We’ll see as it rolls out.
