Steam for Linux

Valve has announced that the Steam for Linux client is now available, and can be grabbed from the Ubuntu apps directory. The press release notes that Steam on Linux is also “best experienced on Ubuntu.”

Naturally, Valve and Steam can’t let an opportunity go by without having a sale. This release is no exception. “Over 50″ Linux games are available at 50-75% off on the service until this time next week. Given that there are only 59 or so available in total right now, this sale may well encompass all of them. [Update]: Yep, it does.

One of those games is Team Fortress 2, and if Steam users play that title on Linux they’ll receive an exclusive, in-game “Tux the penguin” item. It’s not a hat! I’m shocked.

Steam for Linux is also said to support ‘Big Picture’ mode.
