Nvidia unveils Project Shield to stream PC games to portable deviceNvidia Project Shield

Nvidia Project Shield

has revealed their latest piece of tech currently called at CES.

The handheld controller device is powered by their mobile processor Tegra 4 and will allow gamers to stream not only Android games to their TV or attached screen via the controller, but also games from your Steam library.  If your PC includes a GeForce FTX GPU then you’ll be able to use the system.

This means that you can also play Steam games on any TV in your home with the game streaming via wi-fi from the PC to the controller.  Jen-Hsun Huang, co-founder and chief executive officer at NVIDIA added:

“We imagined a device that would do for games what the iPod and Kindle have done for music and books, letting us play in a cool new way. We hope other gamers love SHIELD as much as we do.”

Nvidia also say that the device is “console grade controller” with “ultimate precision” and it comes with a an integrated 5-inch, 1280×720 HD retinal multitouch display, with 294 dpi screen attached to the device. The device includes a speaker system so you quite simply have a gaming machine in your hands.

The fact that the device can stream games from your Steam library is an interesting one and it will make the PC in your home more portable which is a plus for PC gamers. However, we have to remember that most PC games are pretty crap on a controller so how useful it will actually be remains to be seen. For games such as Assassin’s Creed 3 it should work rather well.

More info can be found on the new Project Shield site.
