Those VGA tenth anniversary winners in full; prepare to disagree

8 Dec 2012  by   Peter Parrish

After an exhausting evening of advertisements, talking heads, more advertisements, music, more advertisements and some bonus corporate shilling, the Spike VGAs have finally concluded for another year. It wasn’t all a waste of time, because From Software chose this evening to announce Dark Souls 2. Hurrah for that.

Oh yes, some awards were given out to various games of 2012 as well. Let’s have a look at those, shall we?

  • Game of the Decade – Half-Life 2
  • Game of the Year – The Walking Dead
  • Studio of the Year – Telltale Games
  • Best PC Game – XCOM: Enemy Unknown
  • Best Shooter – Borderlands 2
  • Best Action-Adventure – Dishonored
  • Best RPG – Mass Effect 3
  • Best Multiplayer Game – Borderlands 2
  • Best Individual Sports Game – SSX
  • Best Team Sports Game – NBA 2K13
  • Best Driving Game – Need for Speed: Most Wanted
  • Best Song in a Game – “Cities” by Beck (Sound Shapes)
  • Best Original Score – Journey
  • Best Graphics – Halo 4
  • Best Indie Game – Journey
  • Best Fighting Game – Persona 4 Arena
  • Best Performance (Woman) – Melissa Hutchison as Clementine (The Walking Dead)
  • Best Performance (Man) – Dameon Clarke as Handsome Jack (Borderlands 2)
  • Best DLC – Dawnguard (Skyrim)
  • Best Downloadable Game – The Walking Dead
  • Character of the Year (viewer voted) – Clap Trap (Borderlands 2)
  • Most Anticipated Game (viewer voted) – Grand Theft Auto V

No awards for Diablo 3, nor for Assassin’s Creed 3, which may be considered something of a surprise. With regard to The Walking Dead winning Game of the Year; that was nailed on from the moment Michael ‘Prediction King’ Pachter said it had “no chance” of taking the award in a pre-show interview.

A good night all round for The Walking Dead, and for Borderlands 2 which nabbed three awards (four, if you include the viewer voted character award).
