Diablo 3 is getting an expansion, still selling “very well”

Diablo 3 has, unsurprisingly, sold rather well according to today’s Activision-Blizzard investor call. While sitting atop a pile of Auction House generated gold, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick announced that the action-RPG has sold “in excess of 10 million copies” across North America and Europe, which is a figure they revealed during the last call back in August so it sounds like sales have slowed.

With sales like that, and Activision-Blizzard being Activision-Blizzard, it should come as no shock to learn that an expansion pack for the game is planned. “We do have an expansion planned [for Diablo 3]” Blizzard Entertainment president Mike Morhaime said during the call. Morhaime was clear that there was not even a hint of a release window for this expansion as yet, and that “the quality of the expansion and the gameplay” would be driving their schedule.

A Blizzard title that was given at least a vague release window during the call, however, was Starcraft 2′s ‘Heart of the Swarm’. Morhaime said the team was “working hard towards a first half 2013 launch” with that one.

Activision-Blizzard reported an obscene net revenue of $841 million USD for the third quarter of 2012, and announced that the company has no debt whatsoever. That profit margin was driven by sales of the World of Warcraft expansion Mists of Pandaria, Diablo 3 and action-figure tie-in title Skylanders. With Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on the way later this month too, the company is looking in extremely rude health.

“…“the quality of the expansion and the gameplay” would be driving their schedule….” I’m worried already lol. D3 items are rubbish with 90% of em not useful due to the market demand for all resistance. This severely effects gameplay and vice-versa, I don’t expect to buy the expansion to see this fixed.

Compared to Torchlight 2, I find TL 2 gives me more loot and more suitable loot. Despite all the moaning (myself included), it’s amazing that everyone brought the game even when we knew it wasn’t going to be that D2 we wanted, I reckon that’s what enabled Activision Blizzard to hit those revenue figures.
