Square Enix has become the first publisher to publicly license Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4. Epic Games today confirmed that the deal with Square is a “long-terms” one and that the engine will be used on a number of different games.

“Epic has a strong relationship with Square Enix, and it’s an honor to provide their creative and technical talent with the best game technology available for licensing,” said Epic Games Japan territory manager, Taka Kawasaki. “We look forward to supporting their developers with world-class tools for years to come.”

Square Enix is already a licensee of Unreal Engine 3, meaning the publisher has the rights to use both engines. However, don’t hold your breath for Square to reveal which game/s will use Unreal 4 — such things tend to be kept secret, because videogame production is a national secret or summin?
