IncGamers Podcast Special: The Florence/Wainwright Incident
If you’re a keen observer of games writing and games writers, the past couple of days have offered you a whirlwind of drama, intrigue and sadness.
In this special edition of the Podcast, the IncGamers team discuss the fallout from Robert Florence’s amended Eurogamer article on ethical practices in games journalism, the broader implications of its censorship, and address Lauren Wainwright’s freelance employment by this site in 2010-2011.
During the podcast (hit play below) we refer to a few additional articles, so here are links to those:
- The original, uncensored article, hosted by Stuart Campbell on his Wings Over Sealand blog. At the very least, you should read this.
- John Walker’s (Rock Paper Shotgun) blog (newly updated with a piece by Robert Florence himself; something we didn’t have access to during the recording of this episode).
- Lauren Wainwright’s review of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (which I mistakenly refer to as Tomb Raider and the Guardian of Light in this ‘cast – apologies for that). A couple of notes here: it was dragged back from the archives after a server change, so the screenshots are missing, it’s posted under Paul’s name as Lauren Wainwright no longer has an account here (the correct author name is listed at the top) and the original score of 9.5/10.0 is now 9/10 (as per our switch to a straight ten point system).
- A timeline of events written by Stuart Campbell. This is a comprehensive breakdown of the events of 24-25 of October, which I used as the basis for the summary in the introduction of this podcast. The full piece has additional links and further details.
Update: A response from Robert Florence, posted after the podcast was recorded.
It’s audio only for this broadcast, which you can listen to or download below.
