Paragon Studios shut down, City of Heroes to end this year

31 Aug 2012  by   Peter Parrish

Sadly, it’s time for all the superheroes in City of Heroes to hang up their capes. Due to “a realignment of company focus and publishing support,” publisher NCSoft has decided to close developer (since 2007) Paragon Studios and shut the game down. All recurring subscription billing and Paragon Market purchasing will be discontinued “effective immediately”.

At present a specific closure date for the game has not been revealed, but Paragon states that it will have “more information regarding a detailed timeline for the cessation of services” in the coming weeks.

The statement goes on to praise the hard work of all Paragon employees, urging other studios to offer them work and gives heartfelt thanks to the community for its “years of support”.

City of Heroes launched in 2004 under the development of Cryptic Studios. NCSoft secured the rights to the game in 2007 and delegated development duties to Paragon.

that’s a shame, would have expected this more from CO.

From what I can tell this was turning into a top quality MMO even though it changed to F2P. Sometimes I wonder about the wisdom at NCSoft. Shutting down was their only option? They couldn’t have just reduced the team or have they moved them all on to the super secret MMO?
