Are you eager for the launch of Guild Wars 2?

24 Aug 2012  by   John Robertson

The latest Guild Wars 2 press release is entitled “Video Gamers Eager for the Launch of Guild Wars 2″. That’s what publisher NCsoft and developer ArenaNet are saying, but what do you think?

Are you eager for the launch of Guild Wars 2?

The same press release goes on to explain that the game will be a hit because of its “groundbreaking dynamic event system, action-oriented combat and meaningful personal story lines”. Is that the impression you’ve built up of Guild Wars 2 from what you’ve seen so far?

Personally, the thing I’m most looking forward to about it is that it’s a big budget MMO that doesn’t want to tie me into a subscription model. I’ve played it before know and was suitably impressed, but the monetisation angle is the bit that means it’s a game I’m going to give a chance.

According to ArenaNet president and co-founder Mike O’Brien, Guild Wars 2 is a lot more than that. According to him, it offers something to those looking for “the next evolution in online gaming”.

“Five years ago we set out to develop a game that finally fulfilled the promise of online worlds”, said O’Brien. “We questioned everything that had previously been taken for granted and we never settled for ‘good enough’. Now, we’re finally ready to introduce Guild Wars 2 to gamers who are looking for the next evolution in online gaming”.

O’Brien concludes his subtle promotion of the game by saying:

Guild Wars 2 is that game [that provides something different], and we believe it will fundamentally change the way people think about online RPGs”.

It’s true that players are looking for something different from an MMO nowadays, but do you think it’s going to be Guild Wars 2 that provides it?
