A new patch for the PC version of From Dust will remove the dreaded always-on DRM.
This represents the latest move in an apparently unpredictable Ubisoft DRM strategy, which has seen certain games from the publisher released without always-on DRM (such as Ruse) and others using it regardless.
In the case of From Dust, it was suggested that the game would not have the DRM … until the very last minute when Ubisoft claimed mixed-messages and confusion and included it in the title anyway. That led to reports of refunds and some rather unhappy buyers stuck with a DRMified game.
That is, until today. A patch has been released through Steam that will remove the dreaded DRM, allowing offline play. In addition, saves are moved from the Uplay server system to your own PC.
