Activision Confirms Modern Warfare 2 Terrorist Video29 Oct 2009
Activision has confirmed that the controversial Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 video which hit the net yesterday is genuine. The video shows the player, along with a group of terrorists, slaughtering innocent civilians in an airport and is likely to cause uproar amongst anti games campaigners. In a statement to VG247, Activision confirmed that the video does indeed depict a section of the game, although stressed that it is skippable.“The scene establishes the depth of evil and the cold bloodedness of a rogue Russian villain and his unit. By establishing that evil, it adds to the urgency of the player’s mission to stop them,” said Activision’s spokesperson.“Players have the option of skipping over the scene. At the beginning of the game, there are two ‘checkpoints’ where the player is advised that some people may find an upcoming segment disturbing. These checkpoints can’t be disabled.“Modern Warfare 2 is a fantasy action game designed for intense, realistic game play that mirrors real life conflicts, much like epic, action movies. It is appropriately rated 18 for violent scenes, which means it is intended for those who are 18 and older.”So where do you stand on the scene? Is it an example of a developer pushing the boundaries of storyline in games by switching the narrative perspective? Or could it be a sensationalist publicity stunt designed to get the world talking about the game in the run up to its release? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
